Translation Styles
1. Interpretative-Communicative style (some call it "meaning-based", "idea-oriented" or "idiomatic")
Looks to faithfully re-express in the target language the intent of the original document, in order to convey clearly to the reader exactly what the writer wanted. It is as if the document had been written originally in the target language, in a smooth and easy writing manner. This end-reader-centered style involves, among other features, clear explanations, accurate descriptions and consistent terminology, taking into account existing cultural variables. In technical translations it is frequent that the translated text improves on the original, as the latter might have not been written by a linguist nor a technical writer.
It is probably the preferred style of most end-customers (and readers) if they are given the opportunity to choose.
2. Literal style
Its intent is to replicate (or "mimic") the linguistic structure of the original document, word-to-word, sentence-to-sentence. The translator gives little or no consideration for understandability, flow during reading nor for the suitability of the original sentences' construction and wording when transposed to the target language.
With this style the literal translation is the final translation.
3. Artificial-Intelligence literal style with revising and Quality Assurance
Capable machine/AI translation tools have given a new and very valid twist to literal translations, as they —often very successfully— combine a literal-style approach with Artificial Intelligence in order to create quite readable translations that serve as starting points (such translations are often comparable or even better that the ones produced by literal-minded translators). Combined with subsequent editing ("post-editing") by a capable translator (that contributes subject‑matter expertise, limited rewrites (no "over-editing"), in‑context and consistent terminology, and Quality Assurance), it is an inexpensive way to create translated documents that are fit for many purposes.
With this style the literal translation is just the starting point for the final translation.
